ABOUT US

The School

Avila Convent Matriculation Higher Secondary School is run by the sisters of the Congregation of Mother of Carmel. It is recognized by the Board of Matriculation schools under the Education Department of Tamilnadu and trains students for the X & XII Board exams. The medium of instruction is English, while Tamil is taught as second language and Hindi as optional.

The school has a glorious history of over 55 years to its credit. It is counted among the top educational institutions in Tamilnadu not only in terms of academics but for its contribution towards producing global citizens.
Currently over 4000 children study in various classes of the school starting from kindergarten to XII grade. Apart from excellent academic support, the children also have access to world class facilities and faculty for sports and cultural activities.

The management ensures that the institution not only imparts knowledge but sees to the spiritual, moral & physical well-being of their pupils. The institution is meant primarily for Catholics but is also open to others irrespective of religion, caste or community.

Avila - The Name

The school takes pride – with due reverence and obeisance to her patron saint, Saint Teresa of Avila – in being christened with the name of a province in Spain, which has given to the world Saint Teresa – the unparalleled advocate of the spirit of true Christianity and who carries the title – The Doctor of the Church with unquestionable aptness.

Teresa of Avila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic Saint, Carmelite nun, Writer of the Counter Reformation and theologian of contemplative life through mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered to be a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. In 1622, forty years after her death she was canonized by Pope Gregory XV and was in 1970 named a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI.

What the school shares with this Christian mystic is not merely the name but the most holy and divine intercession through this patron Saint of the school with Christ our Saviour in each second in the life of every Avilite.
